  • Rule Changes for 2019

    Folks, the CCC and OTAO have not finalized all the rule changes for next year but here is a precis of most of them;

    RULES

    1) The definition of zero PIP street tires has been changed to those tires with a UTQG rating of 180 or more, up from last year's 140. There will be exceptions to this rule including allowing Toyo RA-1, R888, and R888R tires as well as Nitto NT-01 tires in to the zero PIP street category. Additionally the Yokohama A052 will be classified as a non premium R compound tire at 5 PIPs despite it have a 200 UTQG rating. There may be other tires added to the list.

    2) Minor strut modifications may be allowed to accommodate larger wheel/tire combinations.

    3) Water injection and methanol injection to forced induction cars will be split into different PIPs

    4) All cars using 95 or higher octane rated fuel or octane boosters will be required to claim the appropriate ECU pips for NA and forced induction engines.

    Scoring and Timing

1)There will be changes to PAX factors for Open Mod and Mod 1 to accommodate the unlimited nature of these classes

    2) We fully intend to introduce transponders to timing for next year and hope to have them available for rent or purchase.

    3) We plan to post all PIP schedules on line 2 days ahead of a competition event available on a secure website

    Car Classification

The 2015-2017 Mustang GT with performance package will have an increased handling index by 5

The 2017 and up Honda Civic Type R will have an increased handling index by 5 and base horsepower has been corrected to 338 crank HP

Cars with high functioning automatic transmissions will have new classifications up by handling index of 5 over the manual transmission versions of the same car. This is similar to what has been done in the past with cars with dual clutch or similar transmissions.

Has a transponder vendor been chosen? Just curious about what might be used.

Thanks for early posting! What is the deal with Nitto tires? Are they a sponsor? Recommended dealer?
      Thx

        Re: Rule Changes for 2019

Nitto is a subsidiary of Toyo tires. In the past the NT01 was basically a different tread pattern variation of the RA-1 although now it may also have a different carcass. It is possible that now it is a Nitto version of the R888 series of tires but either way it seems to perform similarly to the Toyo tires mentioned. And also Toyo is a sponsor.

Good to know! Perhaps NR-01s will be included in the Toyo contingency program?
          Thx

The change of UTQG rating will cause problems for some competitors, including myself, who already purchased 140tw tyres during clearance. I'm not sure of the significance behind bumping up the minimum wear rating, unless there is one single 'cheater tyre' with 140tw that beats all.

At issue is the new Michelin Sport Cup 2R which is rated at 150. We suspect it performs very well. Also since SCCA increased their requirement to 200, there are few tires sitting at 140.

If you have bought 140 UTQG tires ahead of time, you might want to submit a request to the CCC re an exemption

                Hi Joseph,

This was discussed at the competitor's meeting in November and mentioned briefly at the banquet. Always a risk to buy tires before rulebooks are published, but we can look at a transitional year. Like Dave said, submit it to the CCC for consideration.

That's absolutely reasonable, thanks Dave and Stephen for the clarification.
I just learned my lesson about buying tyres ahead of time.
I will submit to CCC for consideration.

MyLaps and the X2 Transponders. With this, you can pretty much participate in any North American race event not just OTA.

Thanks Kevin. Will OTA be able to buy the X2 transponders at a discount and pass on the discounted price to members, or should we just buy them directly from MyLaps?

If you want to buy a transponder, then yes, OTA will have them for sale at a discounted price. But, you don't have to buy one. We have enough for everyone to use during an event and the transponder rental will be included in the price of the event. You will get a discount if you have your own transponder. Buying one has some advantages because you can register it and then have access to all your lap time history after the event using the Mylaps app. But if you don't need or want that data, there is no necessity to buy one. You will still have full access to your laptimes during the event using an OTA supplied transponder.

The transponders fit in a plastic bracket that you buy once (it is cheap) and mount to your car. Zip ties work fine for this. The transponder clips in and out, and the bracket stays on your car, Simple and effective.

Gary, I could look this up, but I'm lazy...

Where does the transponder get mounted? Underside somewhere?

Not sure of the exact technical requirements. At some point there will be a document produced that sets out all the answers to the FAQ's that our competitors will have. We only just pulled the trigger to buy the transponders on Dec 31, after discussing it during the fall. There is work to be done to communicate all the necessary information to our competitors. So, stay tuned. In any event, during discussion I recall hearing that CSCS competitors zip tie the bracket to the front fascia of the car. On my ancient heap, being a former race car, the transponder is mounted under the car. I think as long as the transponder can communicate with the loop embedded in the track, it will be all good. And if it doesn't, Kevin and his guys will know right away, so you will be told about it.
