  • what type of car do i need to get started

i am looking to get into solo 1, what type of car do i need to get started, can it be completley stock without 5 point harness, cage etc.i cant afford a full race ready car right now so if i can just get a stock car and go into solo thats what i will do.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As long as the car is mechanically safe and sound, any car will do, though a manual transmission is preferred. Stock cars are perfectly fine for SoloSprint! It is highly advised that you start out with the SoloSprint school in the spring (which also gets you a free event!). Read the rule book (posted on this forum just a few days ago) to see how the events are run.

You'll find stock or cars that have maximized their mods to be at the top of the class are the most competitive. Start with the most competitive tires you can since you'll find they'll save you more time than several thousand dollars of engine mods. Then if you can try an adjustable shock like a koni yellow on the stock spring if you can.

Start with whatever you have and make sure it's safe (brakes and suspension). Definitely take the school as it's great value for the money, you'll learn from some of the best, and you'll learn how best to drive YOUR car.

After you've done it a few times, you'll see where your gaps are (usually tires and brake pads) and then apply the universal rule of racing "How fast can I go? How much money do you have?"

Don't worry about what you're driving - once you try it you'll see most are street cars of every age and every price point.

Regardless of what you're driving, you will have fun and meet some great people!

How reliable will that retro eighty's porsche be?

Mopar1, I drove a stock cavalier (4 door sedan) this year in T3 (lowest class). I learned a lot and had a blast! An upgrade to toyo RA1's after my first event was very beneficial.

also last i checked neither I, Arek, Brad, Christian, Rob and Derek had any sort of problems during the year.

unless you count Arek's trip to the pool, altho that was purely the drivers decision.

altho there is John Andreas... altho his car is heavily "tuned"

Your right Serge, your suggestions helped alot! Camber change was learned at the spring school from James M. - thanks James!!

Was only good enough to beat you once though.

the only reason i beat you is because i dont have a wife and kids to go home too, being 22 also means i have zero feeling of self preservation.

if its an older car, i would stay away anything with a turbo if you are just "getting into" the sport, the costs of keeping an old turbo car going are slightly higher than that of a simple NA

if you want RWD, i would suggest a simple 240sx or older mustang, atleast with both the parts are dirt cheap (hell the 240sx uses a truck engine for crying out loud),

unless ofcourse either the rx7 or 300zx are in tip top shape.
