  • Rim and Tire Question

So I have a set of Toyo RA1 tires for my wets this year! My question is around wheel size?

I have a 255/40/17 front tire and 235/40/17 rear tire..

Would I be safe to run both of these on an 8" wheel? I know it wouldn't be ideal!

    Any thoughts?

    Re: Rim and Tire Question

Nominal rim size for the 235 would be 8.5 inches
Nominal rim size for the 255 would be 9 inches

      255/40/17 8.5-9.0-10.0 (officially nope)
      235/40/17 8.0-8.5-9.5 (ok)

Why not RPF1 17x9.5"? You'll generally find that wider is better with most performance tires. 255/40 RA1's feel a little squirmy on an 8.5"... I've done that before.

Thanks Stephen, the problem is it's a Civic... I have 17X9's with 35 offset that requires a 10mm spacer just to clear the strut, this makes for a rather close fit with the poke!

I have 255/40/17 Trofeos for the front this season

Trying to avoid further issues with these..

The overall width of the tire is going to be pretty similar between an 8.5" rim and a 9.5" rim, it'll just have more sidewall bulge on the narrower rim making it feel worse and more squirmy.

I'd say those are both fine for an 8 inch rim.

                In a pinch I used to run 245/45-16 RA-1s on a 7 inch wheel.

In a pinch. I see what you did there.

I ended up order 8.5" wheels for this setup...

8.5 is still too small for 255. Will be squirmy.
