sulphur in fuel

Anyone know of anyplace to compare the amount of sulphur in brand X vs brand Y of gas? 91 octane or higher.

Hmmmm, I couldn't find anything convenient, and I doubt there is anything convenient. The producers that have been aggressive in reducing their sulphur content (Sunoco, Irving) are fairly up front about their efforts to reduce sulphur, but they don't seem to advertise the content levels.

The producers who are the worst offenders (and the most intransigent with respect to implementing reductions, like IOL and P.Can) seem to rely on massive obfuscastion efforts.

For the lowest sulphur content, I'd suggest using Sunoco Ultra 94. Sunoco claims to have the lowest sulphur content of any refiner in Ontario (see this) and the ethanol content only serves to further reduce sulphur. I think Pioneer has an ethanol blend as well, but I wouldn't vouch for the quality of the base gasoline.

Hmm, I was expecting Mashall to reply to this thread by now...

I believe this analysis was part of the 2nd yr Mech Eng curriculum at McMaster. Therefore, I would expect other PEO accredited Ontario universities to be the same.

Try phoning up a university or asking a friend enrolled in Mech Eng.

BTW, I'm surprised there's hardly anything on the web about this.

Sulphur content will vary depending on which refinery produced it. Within the next year sulphur content in all of the fuels will drop dramatically with the new legislation.

Hey Mac, is Dr. Judd still there? The old one, unless his son finally managed to get his thesis listened to!

I did that analysis as part of one of Dr. Judd's labs.

Petro-Can was only slightly better than IOL in this analysis. Of course, it's a little old...

Judd is still around... only because they can't find anyone else to teach heat transfer.

I don't think my engine likes high ethanol content gasoline. I find it feels like it has better power with the new Shell 91 formula instead of Sunoco 94. But that could be either octane level or ethanol content. Haven't tried Sunoco 91 lately .. no stations close to me.
