    As in digital camcorders.

I was wondering how / which software do you guys use to convert the footage you guys recorded into either a avi / mpg / wmv format?

    thanks

I convert to an AVI file as it is easier to edit with. BUT it's up to the space you have. A 160 gig hard drive is under $100 now so get one installed at 7200 rpm is perfect for uploading and editing so you can go with the big files then burn to DVD in MPEG for convience.

I use Adobe Premier, but not easy to get your hands on.

MS Movie Maker is perfectly decent for making tiny internet quality wmv's

If you think you might edit with them later leave them in the raw AVI format. Anything else will take way to processor time to uncompress during editing.

I have a seperate HD just for footage. I haven't taken any in a year and it's half full (60 Gigs worth).

I use Sony Vegas, and have a dedicated drive.

I have an old Sony camcorder that weighs in over 2lbs and no USB or 1394 so I use a video capture board.

I have been thinking of going to a Digital Harddrive device like a Archos420 to save some conversion time. (MPEG4)

Damn I thought I posted a reply last night, but I might have fallen asleep in the middle. It woudn't have been the first time it happened.

I use Final Cut Pro, but it's a bit of a resource hog. If I'm on a machine without it installed iMovie works well enough. At least to grab stuff.

If I'm stuck on a PC I just use whatever capture program Nero came with. It works. I think you can edit with it too. I do my transcoding with TMPGEnc to whatever format and my day's done.

Sony Vegas 6.0 here. Its a good mix of usability/functionality. Premier usually just ends up aggrivating me.

If you are wise in the ways of torrents it can be easy to grab.
